10 Artists We Love (And You Will Too!)

If you’re looking for some new artwork for your home, it can be hard to know where to start. There are so many places you can shop for wall art from local galleries to online shops the selection can be overwhelming. That’s why at Cameron Getter Design we’ve rounded up our list of top artists we love. For major art inspiration keep reading below.

Why Buy Original Art

If you’re new to buying original art, you might be hesitant. Is it worth the additional cost? Of course, you could always settle for generic prints but original art makes a one-of-a-kind design statement. And there’s something special about knowing you have a unique piece that no one else owns. Show off your style and personality with beautiful artwork that speaks to you. Better yet you can find original artwork in a range of price points. Below we’re covering some of our favorite artists to fit any style and budget.

If you like abstract pieces with bold colors that inspire emotion, then you’ll love AK Hardeman.

Her works are primarily on canvas and paper. She uses a range of materials to create her work, including acrylic, oil paint, colored pencil, and paper.

Whether you like bold pieces with very bright colors or more neutral works with touches of color, you can find both types in her portfolio. We especially love her pieces with a more neutral background in a deep blue or gray, with gestural strokes of contrasting color.

We’re using one of her works "Holding Both of My Hands" in our Serene Estates Drive project that will be completed later this fall.

The piece will be for the office and will be framed in a maple gallery float frame. The colors make it both calming and invigorating, making it the perfect focal point.

Birmingham-based artist Amee Calloway is an abstract painter who creates mid century-inspired works. Her pieces are mixed medium, but primarily are acrylic on canvas, making them wonderfully textural and interesting.

We’re using an oversize piece of hers “If These Walls Could Talk” in the living room of one of our upcoming projects in South Austin. The piece is large, 48 inches square, and comes framed in a gallery float frame.

This piece is ideal for the space, as the color palette blends perfectly with the rest of the design. The matching tones from the rug and textiles include a blend of neutrals such as rich taupes, deep greys, and touches of green and navy blue that fill the space.

Her works range from mainly neutral in color pallet to bold and bright, she has something for everyone. We love her pieces “Chasing After You” and “Castle on the Hill” which are available on her website.

Heather Essian has a wide range of work. She’s a painter but also creates textiles and ceramics. Her paintings include abstract works on canvas, on paper, and impressionist landscapes.

We love her abstract paintings and commissioned a custom work for the living room of our Beverly Road project. Perfectly situated above the fireplace, it’s the focal point of the room. The serene blues with flecks of white, red, and gold make it a great compliment to the rest of the space. She was a pleasure to work with in creating this custom piece- the artist even helped coordinate the custom champagne gold frame with her local framer, which perfectly suits the piece and the space.

We also love her more neutral works like “Embrace” and “This Moment Matters”. For a true abstract art lover, Heather Essian’s pieces add depth and texture to any room, while also elevating the space.

If you like modern figurative artwork inspired by the Southwest, then Austin-based artist Shawn Cox is one you should check out. He works in a variety of media from painting to digital collage. His pop-art-inspired works also take visual inspiration from vintage photographs, magazines, and 80s pop culture amongst other things. He creates a signature layered technique so that every time you look at one of his pieces you discover new and intriguing details.

If you’re in the market for a Shawn Cox piece, we love “Sour Apple Jolly Rancher” which is oil on fabric, or “24" LENTICULAR Steady Hands” which is a limited edition digital print.

We haven’t yet incorporated his work into one of our projects, but can’t wait until that opportunity arises.

Inspired by travel and interior design, Erin Donahue Tice creates bold abstract paintings on both canvas and paper. She is local to Austin and is a self-taught artist.

We’ve incorporated two pairs of her works on paper for two of our projects – the powder bathroom of Tower Drive and the entryway of Beverly Road. Each piece came in a custom gold frame.

The black and white abstract works in the Tower Drive powder room contrast perfectly with the black and white patterned wallpaper.

If you’re looking for a bold color canvas painting or a smaller work on paper Erin will have something for you.

Austin-based painter Tom Jean Webb’s work is also inspired by the Southwest. He primarily paints desert landscapes and figurative pieces. His signature style with black outlines and solid color-blocked imagery make his works appear clean and precise while visually stunning.

We commissioned a desert-scape for the dining area of our North Hampton project. It makes a great conversation piece perpendicular to the dining table. The muted colors tie in perfectly with the other decorative elements in the space.

He infuses a sense of romance and nostalgia into his work. To add drama to any space we love “I Will Meet You Any When” and “We All Roll The Dice With Our Fingers Crossed”. Both are oversize pieces and use his classic color block style but with an added drip technique, that creates a striking effect.

Abstract expressionist artist Tyler Buck Guinn creates beautifully textural layered pieces that have an organic sensibility. He is also local to Austin and we’ve used his work in both our Tower Drive and Bouldin Creek projects.

In our Tower Drive project, we commissioned custom work for the entryway. The colors are soft neutrals and inviting pastels, while the texture is visually interesting and sets the tone for the design of the home. The pale blues and mauve colors make it a great transition piece from entry to both the kitchen and living areas, tying into the accent colors in both rooms.

We featured three of his works in our Bouldin Creek project. One in the living room, another in the dining area, and a third in an upstairs hallway. Each piece ties into the color palette of each space while balancing the textures and adding visual interest.

If you’re looking for a large-scale Tyler Guinn piece that makes a statement in your home we recommend “In The Stillness You Are There”. It’s mixed media on canvas and features a collection of geometric shapes, imperfectly arranged in solid shades of soft and dark muted colors. Alternatively for more texture and drama, “Open Hands No. 3” is a great piece that’s created with his mark-making technique and incorporates whites, creams, mauves, and blues.

Lauren Williams is a Texas-based painter and textile artist. We love her work and have had the pleasure of commissioning three of her textile pieces, as well as a sculptural textile piece.

Tower Drive Project

During our first time working with Lauren, we commissioned her work for the living room of our Tower Drive project. We were able to tailor the colors and size of the piece to balance the design of the room. It is part of her Canvas With Movement collection created using hundreds of wool strands for a modern and sophisticated wall hanging.

North Hampton Project

For our North Hampton project, we commissioned another textile piece for the living room above the sofa. We already had many of the other design elements finalized so it was a great experience to work with the artist again to create a custom textural piece made perfectly to suit the space.

If you don’t have enough room for a large tapestry wall hanging, we recommend her sculptural pieces, from The Sculpture Fibres collection. They’re vertical hanging pieces created using brass, oak, bamboo, wool, and Tencel fibers. This type of piece is perfect for a bold statement in an entryway.

Sculptural Textile

In addition to her striking textile works, Lauren also creates stunning original abstract paintings. Love one of her paintings, but see that it’s already sold or isn’t the right size for the space? Not to worry she also creates high-quality canvas prints of her works in a range of sizes.

We’re big fans of all her work and can’t wait to find a home for one of her paintings in the future!

Another abstract painter we love is Rylie Caldwell, based in Houston. She paints expressive works on canvas and paper. Many of her works are inspired by the movement of water and invoke a sense of calm and tranquility.

She has a range of pieces from very colorful to more muted pallets, which makes them suit a variety of spaces.

We haven’t had the opportunity to incorporate her work into one of our projects yet, but look forward to specifying her work for a future project one day!

We particularly love her oversize works “Wildling” and “Kinetic” which incorporate deep blues, grays, creams, and taupes. Their neutral color schemes make them good for a variety of spaces while their large scale makes them a great focal point for a living or dining area.

Another Houston-based artist who we discovered during our last trip to Round Top is April Sanders. She creates stunning gestural abstract pieces that blend modern and midcentury aesthetics.

We love her “Dripping Springs” series which are mixed media on canvas. She lets the natural color of the linen canvas serve as the backdrop of these works. Her gestural brush strokes evoke a sense of movement. The three pieces look amazing together, or each can be showcased on its own.
