How to Design the Bedroom Oasis of Your Dreams

You want your bedroom to be a haven for sleep, rest, and relaxation. But more often than not other areas of your home can bleed in – whether it also becomes your home theater or a home office. This can be disruptive to your lifestyle and sleeping habits.

If you want to reclaim your bedroom space and transform it into an oasis, we’re sharing all the tips on how you can create a modern and luxurious bedroom design.

You want your bedroom to be comfortable and practical, but you also want it to look great. It’s important that you balance both function and style.

First, ask what are your needs for the space and what do you have room for?

You’ll want to think about the size of the bed. Do you have room for a queen or a king? Think about how much storage you’ll need. Do you have plenty of closet space available? If not then you might need a dresser and bedside tables.

Do you have space for other accent pieces, like a reading corner or bench at the foot of your bed? What about the wall space available? Is it important to have a TV in your room or would you rather have beautiful artwork to look at?

These basic questions will set the foundation for your room and help inform the rest of the design.

The color pallet of a room affects the feel and mood of the space. Before you decide on a color scheme ask yourself how you want to feel while in your bedroom?

You’ll want to think about colors that promote rest and relaxation. These are earth tones – neutrals, blues, and greens. Similarly, you’ll want to avoid anything too bright and energizing like reds, yellows, or oranges.

If you’re a fan of bright colors, think about incorporating color in smaller accents, rather than having them be the main focal point of the space. In our Farmdale Lane master bedroom, we kept the pallet simple with dark wood tones, creams, and blue. However, the client wanted to incorporate her favorite color orange into the space. So we selected a gorgeous abstract print “Mind” by Dan Hobday, available by Wonderwall Studio. We also tied in some soft orange tones with the area rug. These light touches are just enough to add some color to the space without feeling overwhelming.

Also, remember that neutrals or soft colors don’t mean boring. You can add personality in accent pieces that have texture and dimension.

With the mindset that function is very important for your bedroom, you’ll want to prioritize your bed. After all, it is the main feature of your room.

You’ll want to be sure you invest in a quality mattress and bedding for comfort. Think about if you like minimal bedding or lots of plush layers and pillows.

You’ll not only want to think about the comfort of your bed but it may also be the focal point and main design feature of your room. So you’ll want to think about how you can showcase it and make it a cool design statement.

For example, in the guest bedroom of our Bouldin Creek project, the client already had a beautiful Restoration Hardware wooden canopy bed so we highlighted this with a gorgeous vintage rug from 1800getarug.com and comfortable bedding from Westelm.

Another way to make the bed the focal point of space is to do a headboard accent wall, with a wall treatment. Which draws the eye to the headboard wall, framing the bed as the focus.

In the master bedroom of Boulding Creek, we highlighted the bed through a wallpapered accent wall in a graphic design by These Walls. We kept the client's existing Restoration Hardware bedframe and added comfort with cozy Parachute Home bedding

In our Eastside Casita project, we did a shiplap accent wall in a bold yet soothing Rocky River color by Sherwin-Williams. To balance the green wall we kept the rest of the design neutral with natural wood tones, white bedding, and small touches of navy.

To make your bedroom feel comfortable and refined, think about adding luxurious design elements. You can do this in a number of ways, like with the choice of bedding – think about adding plush layers with a duvet, blankets, and pillows. Or incorporate special accent pieces throughout the space.

A vintage or new hand-knotted plush rug, not only feels great on your bare feet, but they are high quality and are made to last. In the guest bedroom of our Tower Drive project, we included the Mirabelle Rug by Serena & Lily. It’s double-tufted for a thick and sumptuous feel. It paired well with the green velvet bed frame which was custom made in Austin with a performance velvet fabric by Kravet. The last touch of luxury we added were the Leather Wrapped bedside tables by Bungalow 5. The brass inlay detail help elevate the space while complimenting the bed and rug.

Another show-stopping tufted, upholstered bed was a feature of the master bedroom in our Farmdale Lane project. It’s also a custom piece made locally in Austin covered in a sumptuous Indigo performance velvet fabric. The black marble wall scones look like elegant jeweled earrings installed on either side of the bed, instantly upgrading the space. Last but not least the BD Studio Walt Chandelier perfectly finishes off the room.

For the master bedroom of our Bouldin Creek project, we went for touches of luxury with the Sunburst Cabinet Nightstands and a vintage-inspired area rug by Loloi and Amber Lewis. Both add old-world sophistication to balance out the modern wallpaper.

These types of accents add layers of depth to a bedroom making it feel indulgent and special.

When it comes to your bedroom lighting is just as important as color when it comes to setting the tone and ambiance of the room. You’ll want to create a blanched and layered lighting scheme.

But it can be hard to know what to incorporate when you have overhead lighting options like chandeliers, pendant lights, and recessed lights. You also can consider table lamps or floor lamp options. What about bedside wall sconces? You don’t want to add all these types of lighting available because then the design elements would compete with each other leaving your bedroom looking cluttered.

We recommend going with recessed lights on a dimmer switch and then adding a single statement feature whether that’s scones or table lamps. Having bedside lighting is important to consider for functionality if you want easy access to reading lights while in bed.

We took this approach for the master bedroom in our Bouldin Creek project, with recessed ceiling lights. This let the Restoration Hardware Swing-Arm Scones be the main light feature, which compliment the wallpaper and nightstands.

When thinking about lighting you’ll not only want to consider light fixtures but also window treatments to regulate natural light and create privacy when needed. In our projects, roman shades, roller shades, and drapery are all the most popular options we recommend for our clients.

In our Farmdale Lane bedroom, we included custom roller shades from The Shade Store. They’re sleek and minimal while filtering the light that comes in, allowing for soft natural light and still offering privacy.

For our Rough Hollow project, we went with roman shades in a thicker material so they help block out more light. We went with an oatmeal color which compliments the natural wood tones in the space.

When planning the layout of your bedroom and determining what pieces of furnishings you want to include it’s important to avoid clutter. This is because a cluttered space can feel overwhelming and chaotic, which to say the least is not conducive for rest and relaxation.

This means keeping your design minimal and not overcrowding with furniture. You may want to include a bed, dresser, bedside tables, bench, chair, or other pieces, but be careful not to cram them all in.

In all our projects you’ll notice we only include three to four pieces of main furniture items, depending on the size of the space. By keeping the primary furnishings to a limited number you’ll have enough space to move around comfortably. Remember that you can always add texture and visual interest through accent pieces and artwork.

Don’t forget to include plenty of storage and organizational pieces to put things away. This could be in the form of a closet, bedside tables, dresser, baskets, or other organizational solutions.
